History of Champions Trophy
The ICC Champions Trophy, formerly called the ICC Knockout Trophy, is a quadrennial cricket tournament organized by the International Cricket Council. It is played in ODI format. It was inaugurated in 1998 by the ICC to raise funds for the development of the non-test playing countries. From 1988 to 2000, the game was played on a knockout basis. Later, the name of the tournament shifted to Champions Trophy before the 2002 edition.

The tournament is also called the “Mini World Cup” as it involves the eight teams that are members of the ICC. Up to 2006, the Champions Trophy was held every two years. In 2008, the tournament was scheduled to take place in Pakistan. However, due to security reasons, it was shifted to South Africa in 2009. From then on, it has been held every four years, like the World Cup.
Champions Trophy 2025
ICC launched a refreshed visual identity for the Champions Trophy with the release of a brand launch video. Pakistan was announced as the host of this year’s event. However, due to the refusal of India to travel to Pakistan for the tournament, citing security concerns, an agreement has been made between BCCI and PCB for games to be played across Pakistan and a neutral venue, later announced as the UAE.
