The Elaborate History of Champions Trophy
The ICC Champions Trophy, formerly known as the ICC KnockOut Trophy, is an international One Day International (ODI) cricket tournament organized by the head governing body of world cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC). Inaugurated in 1998, the tournament was aimed to raise funds for the development of cricket in non-Test playing nations.
With the same aim in mind, the first edition took place in Bangladesh in June 1998, at a time when the Cricket World Cup had been held for 23 years with six completed editions. The first two Champions Trophy tournaments were hosted in ICC Associate member nations—Bangladesh and Kenya—to increase the sport’s popularity and generate funds for the development of cricket in these countries.
Since the 2002 edition, the hosting rights have been shared among countries under an unofficial rotation system, with six ICC members having hosted at least one match. The current format includes a qualification phase, determined by the preceding Cricket World Cup, where the top eight ranked teams (including the hosts) secure spots in the tournament phase.
So far, fourteen teams have competed in the nine editions. India, with three titles (2002, 2013, 2025), is the most successful team. Australia has won twice (2006, 2009), while South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Pakistan each have one win. Notably, Rohit Sharma-led India is the current champions, having won the 2025 edition.
2024: ICC Launch Refreshed Visual Identity for the Champions Trophy
In November 2024, the ICC unveiled a new visual identity for the men’s and women’s Champions Trophy, bringing a bold, vibrant, and distinctive edge. The men’s event will return in 2025 after a hiatus since 2017, while the women’s tournament will debut in the T20 format. The Champions Trophy will now be held every two years, alternating between men’s ODIs and women’s T20s. The modern design features a bold, unconventional typographic logo, celebrating the language of cricket. ICC CCO Anurag Dahiya highlighted the new identity’s fun, dynamic nature, reflecting the excitement and global appeal of the tournament, along with its iconic white jackets.
